Dalmatian dogs and martens may be considered the main animals of Croatia.
Specifically, Dalmatian dogs come from the Croatian region called Dalmatia. Their historic role was guard duty along Dalmatia's borders. They were considered effective and loyal hunting companions.
Martens (Martes spp) prefer forested areas. They have yellowish to brownish fur that has been highly prized throughout history. Their importance is memorialized in the designation of Croatian currency as "kuna," which is the Croatian word for "marten."
