Hi,

I'm from Australia and we have different terminology to the US so I'll try to answer in US terms.

HMA consists of several components the 2 most prevalent ones are

a. aggregate

b. bitumen

Each of these components have different thermal behaviours. The differential thermal contraction is the difference in contraction between the bitumen and the aggregate for a given temperature regime

E.g. for a -10 deg change in the ambient temperature over an hour, the aggregate will lose less heat and contract less (if at all) than the bitumen over the same period. The difference in the change in contraction of the aggregate and the bitumen is the differential thermal contraction.

This phenomenon is something that needs to be considered in freeze/thaw environments as large in-service temperature changes can shock and weaken the HMA layers.

The AASHTO Guide has some useful information in it regarding freeze/thaw environments and the time-temperature dependency of HMA.

What is the difference between cold mix asphalt and cutback asphalt?

Cold Mix Asphalt is a mixture of aggregate and asphalt. Cutback asphalt is a liquid asphalt. Cold Mix Asphalt is a mixture of Aggregate and Asphalt. The Asphalt is usually am emulsion asphalt or a cutback asphalt. An emulsion asphalt is asphalt cement blended with water. Cutback asphalt is asphalt cement blended with a fuel oil, kerosene, or a naptha. The water, fuel oil, kerosene or Naphta evaporates and leaves the asphalt.

What is the difference between bitumen and crude oil?

'asphalt' refers to a mixture of mineral aggregate and bitumen (bitumen)is the black liquid which is extracted from the crude oil....

What meant by well graded aggregate?

Well-graded aggregate refers to a mixture of different particle sizes that provides a dense and compact structure in concrete or asphalt. This grading ensures that smaller particles fill the voids between larger particles, resulting in improved workability, reduced void content, and enhanced mechanical properties. A well-graded aggregate can lead to better strength, durability, and resistance to segregation in construction materials.

What is the relationship between aggregate expenditure and real GDP?

There is a direct proportional relationship between aggregate expenditure and real GDP. Aggregate expenditure is actually equal to real GDP. This is different from the planned expenditure.

What is difference between road tar and asphalt?

Road tar is made from coal. Asphalt is a heavy fraction of petroleum.

How hot is asphalt?

Depending on its composition asphalt melts between 54-173°C. Roofing asphalt will tend to be higher as it is applied on a slope and must set up quickly. Sun baked asphalt can reach temperatures of 145 °C - hot enough to cause second degree burns.
