Actually, when it opened in 1992 it wasn't called Disneyland Paris -- the entire complex was named Euro Disney Resort and the park was Euro Disneyland. The name change came in 1995. A further name modification took place in 2002 when they added French spelling to the English spelling, so Parc Disneyland was also used. But in a nutshell, the park wasn't at first successful because it either ignored or was insensitive to French culture and individualism, and Disney execs tried to run the park like it would in the U.S. -- at least that's how the French saw it.
