Poe is considered to be the father of the modern detective story. His character, Chevalier C. Auguste Dupin, was the precursor to Sherlock Holmes as Conan Doyle's character Dr. Watson said to Sherlock (in the first Holmes Story "A Study in Scarlet") "You remind me of Edgar Allen [SIC] Poe's Dupin." (I might add that it is Edgar Allan Poe in the American editions.) His stories "The Murders in the Rue Morgue," "The Mystery of Marie Roget," and "The Puloined Letter." It also comes from the fact that he has the first recurring detective character in the stories, Chevalier C. Auguste Dupin. Poe was also a major contributor to the popularity of the Short Story as well as the horror genre. Poe was called the father of modern detective stories by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.
