English: "Great Britain" is German: "Großbritannien"

English: "England" is German: "England" (but of course pronounced differently)

The United Kingdom (Great Britain) is a constitutional monarchy and unitary state consisting of 4 countries: England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales.

In German England is the same thing, but you can also say Grossbritanien which is Great Britain.

"Vereinigtes Königreich von Großbritannien und Nordirland" is the correct term.

but

"Großbritannien" is most commonly used.

In everyday usage, most Germans actually make the mistake of referring to the UK as England. Having experienced the quality of German education at first hand, this appears to be more a matter of laziness than ignorance.

Examples of this laziness can be heard in old newsreels of the Third Reich, in which Hitler makes numerous references to England and the Engländer (the English) but is in actual fact referring to the UK and the British.
