The Episcopal Church is a member of the Anglican Communion of over 85 million adherents worldwide. The Episcopal Church in the U.S. has over 2 million members and is one of the oldest denominations since the Revolutionary War. We are a bridge between the Roman Catholic Church and the Protestants. We use the Book of Common Prayer for every service. Our prayer book and the 39 Articles of Religion derives from our Mother Church-the Church of England. We celebrate all 7 sacraments including Holy Communion and Baptism as well as Confirmation, Extreme Unction, Holy Matrimony, and Holy Burial. Compared to the Protestants, we strongly believe in rituals and liturgics. Most of our services can be described as "high church". I love our stain glass windows, the high altar, and the beautiful vestments worn by clergy and acolytes. We accept the Bible and its teachings but we are not fundamentalist-believing everything is literally true. We incorporate reason and tradition as well as theology to help educate us in our Christian journey. The Episcopal Church is a progressive church that has taken the lead on many controversial issues including gay rights and abortion rights for women. We believe most things should be done in moderation, including drinking and gambling. We oppose capital punishment and have always been at the forefront in civil rights-for everyone! We strongly believe that you should celebrate what God created you to be! If you want to be a part of a rich and diverse tradition that is found all over the world, than come to the Anglican Church and you will be treated with the utmost respect!
