A request will be sent to them and will become official once they approve. Additionally, you can change the privacy setting so that some people see the relationships and others do not. If you go back to "Info" and "edit", on the right below the list there should be the words "privacy settings" in blue. Click on that and you can choose who is able to see those relationships or not.
