First, into REGIONS, each with its elected Assemblée Régionale; each region consists of a number of Départements (counties) under the supervision of a Préfet. The main town is the chef-lieu, and the local government offices are the Préfecture. There is also an elected Conseil-Général. The Départements are divided into Arrondissements, each of which has a Sous-Préfet working in a Sous-Préfecture. Each arrondissement is divided into Cantons, though these have little function today. Cantons are divided into Communes, each with its Maire (Mayor) and Conseil Municipal. A Commune can have as few as 50 or as many as a million inhabitants.
