What is global warming and how can we stop it?

Global warming is the recent rapid warming of the world. The ten hottest years have all occurred in the past twelve years.

It is being caused by the burning of fossil fuels (coal, oil and natural gas) in industry, transport and the generation of electricity, which releases carbon dioxide (CO2).

Carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas that is therefore building up in the atmosphere.

We can stop it by changing to renewable energy (solar, wind, water, hydro, tidal and wave, geothermal, ocean thermal, biomass and biofuel). This energy has no harmful emissions.

Global warming can no longer be prevented, at least not in the short term. Maintaining our high standard of living requires that we continue to use fossil fuels for transport and to generate electricity. But we can slow down the process by reducing our production of carbon dioxide, methane and other greenhouse gases, then finally become carbon neutral so that the global warming process eventually ceases.

Right now we can reduce our use of electricity by using more efficient products, turning off lights and appliances, and by reducing our use of oil with more fuel-efficient cars and use public transport whenever possible. Governments and industry must move towards using alternative sources of energy such as wind and solar power, geothermal resources and so on.

I am doing absolutely nothing to cause global warming. And if I was, I wouldn't do anything to prevent it.

I am doing as little as possible to cause global warming. I already minimise my use of electricity, consistent with comfort and convenience, and already use public transport in preference to using my car when possible. Of course, I switch off lights and appliances when not in use.

I have installed home insulation to minimise my use of electricity for heating and cooling, and have replaced my incandescent light bulbs by high efficiency ones. This way I am saving money at the same time as I reduce my contribution to global warming. I am also looking at replacing some of my lights by LED lights, which use so little electricity you would hardly notice. I have not yet installed a solar hot water system, but that's on my list.
