The Lakhóta along with the rest of the Plains Indians were and still are monothiestic. They believe in a multitude of spirits such as the spirits of the four winds or the four cardinal directions. Spirits of the mountains, rivers, lakes, sky, weather, thunder, wind, rocks, trees etcétera. But they believe in only one god, God who is over mankind, other animals ant over sll the spirit-gods.
Wakhan Thanka means big or great mystery or power. This power is unseen and ever powerful. When the Plains Indians pray they pray first to the four cardinal directions one at a time. Than their prayers are directed to Grandmother Earth, and lastly to the big almighty one in the sky (day or night) who is God Wakhan Thanka. Their belief: after going through rounds of prayer loading the prayer pipe with tobacco (prayers are said as each pinch of tobacco is put into (loaded) the pipe. (Can take an hour or more in a Sweat Lodge). A prayer is offered until the pipe is full. Then a few more rounds of prayer are offered. Each round they prayers become more intense and elaborate. Finally the Prayer Pipe is lit and passed around as yet more prayers to God Wakhan Thanka are offered until the tobacco is used up. They believe that the smoke from the burning tobacco carries their prayers to God in Heaven.
The Arapaho are extremely religious. They can spend 4 to 6 hours praying in a Sweat Lodge while sweating profusely.
