There is no evidence that the Arabs themselves had believed they were descended from Ishmael until the arrival of Christianity in southern Arabia. By the time of Muhammad (c 570-632 CE), the Arabs had begun to accept that they, or at least some Arabs, really are descended from Ishmael.
