ISIL refers to the paramilitary organization operating in the Sunni-majority areas of Iraq and Syria and that controls a large swath of territory in both. The Government of Iraq and ISIL are currently in a state of war.

ISIS originated in Iraq. It emerged from a group called Al-Qaeda in Iraq (AQI), which was formed in the early 2000s during the aftermath of the U.S. invasion of Iraq. Over time, this group evolved into the Islamic State of Iraq and later expanded to include Syria, ultimately declaring a caliphate in 2014.
