Perhaps ½ a percent? Tarlabasi covers 1-2 square kilometers in the Beyoglu area of Istanbuls inner city, paradoxically very close to the posh Istiklal Walking Street. The whole city is 80 km in diameter, with 14 mio. people. The largest slums are in the outer suburbs - like gaziosmanpasa with 1 mio. people - not like a third world slum, but still a slum. Other poor areas are Ümraniye, Esenler, Esenyurt and Sultanbeyli. Gnp/capita in turkey is 10000$ whereas 1500$ in a country like India...and Istanbuls slums are not in any way as poor and bad as slums in Latin America or South East Asis....and first of all they are pretty safe - crime rates are low.
