- The "Father of the Constitution" because he played an important role in its writing and also kept notes at the Convention which proved to be historically valuable.
- US Congressman for 8 years (1789-1997)- introduced the Bill of Rights
- Secretary of State for Jefferson (1801-1809)
- member of the Continental Congress(1780-1783)
- member of Virginia House of Delegates ( 1776-1777)
