He essentially made a career out of being a founding father- participating in the conventions that led to the Declaration of Independence, the setting up of a provisional government during the war and the writing of a Constitution for the United States after the War. He served in Congress for 8 years and then became Secretary of State under Jefferson.

  • US Congressman for 8 years (1789-1997)- introduced the Bill of Rights
  • Secretary of State for Jefferson (1801-1809)
  • member of the Continental Congress(1780-1783)
  • member of Virginia House of Delegates ( 1776-1777)
He also ran the family estate where with the help of slaves he raised crops and animals.

James Madison mostly stayed at home at his house in Port Conway VA. until he was appointed secretary of state by Thomas Jefferson. He was also a huge influence on the constitution.
