日本 Rì běn 、or Nihon (when romanized) can be traced to the original pictorial meanings of the kanji used to write Japan in Japanese. (Kanji is also Chinese)

Japan is known as the 'Land of the Rising Sun'.

The nickname comes from the two characters: The first character, ni, represents the sun. The second character means "orginal" or "originates", which gives birth to meaning of "where the sun rose from".
