both Buddhism and Shinto are practiced in Japan, and often at the same time. marriages are often Buddhist ceremonies, and funerals are Shinto ceremonies.
Christianity has been making inroads as well, and in the Japanese way of thinking one can be a Christian, Buddhist, and practice Shinto all at the same time. It may sound strange to westerners, but this system of following multiple religions at the same time has been working well for the Japanese for the last 10,000 years or so.
