To understand what Kali is, we must know about the seven basic Hindu gods.
THE SEVEN BASIC HINDU GODS:
They are,
1. Indra - god of day dreaming / god of heaven
2. Shakti - the god of illusion (Kali is one of the infinite Shakti gods/ goddesses)
3. Brahma - the god of creativity
4. Vishnu - the god of stabilization
5. Shiva - the god of determination
6. Shani - the god of status increase
7. Yama - the god of compulsion
Since Indra is the god of heaven, in the real world, Shakti is the most powerful god in abolishing actions.
THE SHAKTI:
All the seven Hindu gods are forces within us.
Each of them is made of two forces.
1. Moving force - god
2. Braking force - goddess.
Hanuman and Subramani are examples of Shakti gods. However, as a rule the Shakti always represents a goddess.
The Shakti is an illusory force. It enables us to create an illusion that we are powerful and satisfied.
It abolishes all movements. If there is a threat to our life or if we are standing with hunger in front of the best food, it is Shakti that makes us immobile creating an illusion that we are strong and satisfied.
Kali can be seen trampling Shiva, indicating that the most powerful Hindu god Shiva can't enable us to move when Kali is abolishing our movement.
The Shakti force is necessary to hibernate in the real world peacefully under harsh external conditions, biding our time.
However, the absence of the associated god means that the illusion should never be converted into action because it would expose the bluff.
SHAKTI GODS AND PARVATI:
Shakti gods are very popular in villages and they are infinite. The drawback of Shakti gods is that they give comfort but never enable us to improve in the real world.
To make Shakti goddesses materialistic, the Shakti gods, including Kali, are considered as incarnations of Parvati.
1. Under harsh conditions Kali gives us illusory comfort
2. Under better conditions, as Parvati, she makes our life materialistically better through her consort Shiva, who is a materialistic god.
3. As the most powerful god in abolishing actions, she acts as Saguna Brahman, enabling us to consider our entire life at once.
In this Mahakali form, she would have ten heads, ten arms and ten feet. This is akin to Saguna Brahman/ Purusha, with thousand heads, thousand eyes and thousand feet.
