The present pier was built in 1876-77 and opened to the public on 1 August 1877. A landwards extension was opened in 1884 and a new landing-stage was added in 1891. This landing-stage was totally rebuilt in 1969.
The main building at the end of Llandudno pier (which should be described as the Pierhead Pavilion - see photo in Links section below) was originally built as a bandstand, then later expanded into a theater but one which was used mainly for orchestral recitals. However, it did play host to Pierrot shows in the early years of the 20th century. Its internal appearance resembled a theater, in that it had a stage, proscenium arch and rows of seating. Its theater use ceased entirely in the mid 1970s, when it was converted to an amusement arcade. The main theater on the pier was the much larger Pier Pavilion, which was situated at the pier entrance - look in the related links below for the full information.
Llandudno became a popular tourist spot due to its picturesque coastal scenery, sandy beaches, and Victorian architecture, which attracted visitors in the 19th century. The town's well-developed infrastructure, including the famous Llandudno Pier and the Great Orme tramway, further enhanced its appeal. Additionally, the arrival of the railway made it easily accessible, solidifying its status as a prime seaside resort in North Wales. Today, it continues to attract tourists with its charming atmosphere and various recreational activities.
