Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827) was a German composer. He continued to compose music even after he began losing his power to hear when he was 28 years old. Beethoven's Fifth and his Ninth Symphony are two of the best known compositions.

He first performed at the age of seven.

Beethoven went deaf at an early age. It is said that he cut the legs off a piano so he could feel the vibrations of the music so that he could still conduct music. This, however, is not as dramatic as it sounds: many early pianos were made with removable legs so they could be moved between the courts where the musicians played.

Beethoven is generally regarded as the composer who bridged the transition between the Classical and Romantic Eras in music. It was Beethoven's introduction of expressive and passionate dynamics that introduced the Romantic Era.

Ludwig van Beethoven's most notable works are arguably his symphonies, particularly the Fifth and the Ninth, the latter being known as the Choral Symphony because it was the first to include "voice" as a scored instrument.

Most people know he was a great composer who was deaf. This in itself is a remarkable feat, as he was unable to hear the music he wrote, yet it was flawless in its harmonies.
