It also demonstrates the failure of the disciples to understand before the Crucifixion that Jesus would rise from the dead, hence their initial amazement of disbelief. In all cases, this changed dramatically once Jesus demonstated to them whom he was.

On this occasion, it was the breaking of the bread which revealed Christ's identity to them. He had previously been the one to break bread at their meals together, and this also would have revealed the wounds on his hands to them.

In chapter 13, verses 24 to 30 doctor Luke records for us some of the most sobering and solemn words of warning spoken by Lord Jesus. Matthew in chapter 7, verses 13-23 gives an account of a very similar discourse but in a different setting, they are not describing the same event but the message and the words are so similar, that it would help our understanding to look at both side by side.

In short, this passage is Jesus' answer to question by an unnamed person in the audience: "Lord, are they few that be saved?" to which the Lord answered "Strive to enter in by the narrow door: for many, I say unto you, shall seek to enter in, and shall not be able." and in Matthews account He added "and few be they that find it". Lord Jesus continues by describing the sad end of the great majority of the professing believers (we did eat and drink in thy presence), who evidently think that they belong to the Lord, but to whom He will then solemnly reply: "I tell you, I do not know you whence ye are; depart from me, all ye workers of iniquity"

In verses 28-30, He gives a warning to the descendants of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob not to presume that based on their heritage they will be accepted, but "they shall come from east and west, and from north and south", in other words Gentiles, who have no relation to the patriarchs, and strangers to the covenant God made with Abraham, and thus they that were last, will be first and many of the Jews, that by all account should have been first, will be last.

Luke 24:13 Now behold, two of them were traveling that same day to a village called Emmaus, which was seven miles from Jerusalem.

This is about how a stranger (Jesus) met two disciples who were on their way to Emmaus and explained to them how His death burial and resurrection was prophesied in the scriptures.

The stranger had a meal with them and when He broke bread and gave thanks the disciples realised the stranger was Jesus, but then Jesus vanished.

Matthew Henry makes this observation:

"This appearance of Jesus to the two disciples going to Emmanus, happened the same day that He rose from the dead. It well becomes the disciples of Christ to talk together of His death and resurrection; thus they may improve one another's knowledge, refresh one another's memory, and stir up each other's devout affections. And where but two together are well employed in work of that kind, He will come to them, and make a third.

"Those who seek Christ, shall find Him: He will manifest Himself to those that inquire after Him; and give knowledge to those who use the helps for knowledge which they have.

"No matter how it was, but so it was, they did not know Him; He so ordering it, that they might the more freely discourse with Him. Christ's disciples are often sad and sorrowful, even when they have reason to rejoice; but through the weakness of their faith, they cannot take the comfort offered to them. Though Christ is entered into His state of exaltation, yet He notices the sorrows of His disciples, and is afflicted in their afflictions.

"Those are strangers in Jerusalem, that know not of the death and sufferings of Jesus. Those who have the knowledge of Christ crucified, should seek to spread that knowledge. Our Lord Jesus reproved them for the weakness of their faith in the Scriptures of the Old Testament..." (Matthew Henry's Concise Commentary: Luke 24:13-27).

This has no corresponding passage in any of the other gospels and is actually inconsistent with the others, with the possible exception of the "long ending" (verses 16:9-20) that was added to Mark's Gospel during the second century. After the burial of Jesus, two disciples walked on the road to the village of Emmaus. We are told that one of them was called Cleopas, and it seems likely that the other was Peter.

Jesus joined the two on the road, but they did not recognise him, asking if he was a stranger in these parts. This provides the opportunity for the Gospel to summarise the purpose of Jesus' mission and the miracle of his apparent resurrection (verses 19-24). Then Jesus continued the summary of his mission, saying that his suffering was necessary for him to enter into his glory. But still the disciples did not recognise him. They invited him to join them for dinner. When he blessed the bread , they suddenly recognised him as Jesus (verse 31).

The major theme of the passage is the summary of the purpose of Jesus' mission and the miracle of his apparent resurrection, with a further theme that the two did not recognise Jesus. The meaning of the failure of the two to recognise Jesus is unclear, since they had lived and preached with him for perhaps three years, and his hands and feet should have had visible signs of his crucifixion, as stated in 24:40.
