In Greek, Mars Hill (Roman) was called the Hill of Ares or the Areopagus. The Apostle Paul while in the area ,met a Epicurean and a Stoic philosophers in the market place and these asked Paul to come and explain who the 'Unknown God' of the inscription on an altar. Paul used the opportunity to point out the religious idolatry of the Greeks and explained God from Genesis to Jesus. Some converted, some where up in the air and most simply discounted the presentation. The story may be read in Acts 17:16-34.
