Mexico is not an Spanish word. In fact, it is a Nahuatl word. Nahuatl was the main language used in Central Mexico in the centuries just before the Spanish conquerors arrived there, in the early XVI century. It is an adaptation of the word "mexica", the name of the dominant people of the region by the time. The mexica were also called Aztecs.

The word Mēxihco could mean "in the navel of the moon" or, maybe "Land of Mexihtli", i.e., Land of Huitzilopochtli, the Aztec God of War. Huitzilopochtli means "blue hummingbird".
