Moses is famous for essentially two things. As a leader he brought the Israelites out of bondage in Egypt. As a man who was brought up in pharaoh's house and educated with 'all the learning of the Egyptians', he evidently knew how to write, since he is also credited with authorship of the Pentateuch. In regard to the last four books, he was a personal participant in much that transpired. In relation to Genesis, he evidently either recorded or else edited previous material.

Moses was known as the leader who took the Israelites out of Egypt under God's direction. He also received and recorded God's law and will for His people. In doing so he wrote major portions of the Pentateuch and probably edited what details he received about the events in Genesis into their final form. The 10 commandments being just one small part of this major written work

Thus his achievements are in the field of political leadership, religion and literature. These roles were often simultaneously exercised.

Moses is remembered as the man who got the Jews freed from slavery in Egypt. And for leading them in the wilderness. He is also known to talk to God and collect the ten commandments.

Answer:

According to Jesus' breakdown of the Word of God... He referred to Moses' contribution as:

"...the LAW of Moses..." (Luke 24:44).

One of the main things God commissioned Moses for was to "record [write down] His laws" for us, today, so they could be read, studied and not forgotten [and... so that we wouldn't have any excuse for forgetting them].

"O how I love thy law! It is my meditation all the day." (Ps.119:97)

"...If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead." (Luke 16:31)

"This is he [Moses], that was in the church in the wilderness... who received the Lively Oracles [the inspired Words of God] to give to us..." (Acts 7:38).

Moses had a mountain of duties and responsibilities before God, leading over two million people. But Jesus speaks highly to us of Moses' preservation of God's law, that He, Himself, wrote in the stone tables "with His own finger":

"...He gave unto Moses, when He had made an end of communing with him upon Mount Sinai, two tables of testimony, tables of stone, written with the finger of God." [Ex.31:18)

Meanwhile, the world mainly knows Moses as looking like "Charlton Heston"... and parting the Red Sea on the silver screen.

Moses is famous because Jewish and biblical tradition links him with the Exodus of the Israelites from Egypt. Because the one person most closely associated with many of the events portrayed in the Pentateuch ( the Books of Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy), he also became famous as the supposed author of these books.

Fame is, of course, different to history and most historians of the period now say there was no Exodus from Egypt as described in The Bible. For more information, please visit: http://christianity.answers.com/theology/moses-in-history-and-tradition

Many Christians believe that Moses did not write the entire book of Deuteronomy because of the presence of passages that describe Moses's death and burial, which indicates that someone else wrote those sections after Moses's lifetime.
