Mount St. Helens is a volcanic peak in southwest Washington state, in the Cascade range. In 1980, after 123 years of relative dormancy, it became unstable again.
On May 18, 1980, it erupted violently, blasting tons of rock and ash into the air. The south face of the mountain completely collapsed. The summit, which had been building up as the latest in a series of volcanic domes, was completely destroyed. The eruption killed 57 people and did nearly a billion dollars worth of damage to forests and inhabited areas (1980 US dollars). Ash covered thousands of square miles near the area, to various depths.
