Mr. and Mrs. Van Daan were a married couple who went into hiding with Anne Frank and her family during World War II in the Secret Annex in Amsterdam. Their real names were Hermann and Auguste van Pels. They had one son, Peter, who became friends with Anne Frank during their time in hiding.
Mr. Dussel accuses Mr. Van Daan of stealing food and other supplies from the hiding place. The accusations have merit because there are instances where food goes missing and Mr. Van Daan is seen behaving suspiciously around the food storage area. This leads to tension and conflict within the group of people in hiding.

There was not really a strong friendship mentioned in the novel, although i would think Mr. Van Daan might of disliked Mr. Frank due to Mrs. Van Daan being quite flirtatious with him, although Mr. Frank ignored it. Not exactly a friend i suppose, probably grateful for Mr. Frank allowing them to stay in the Annex, and probably some what irritated with him because of Mrs. Van Daan.
