The "cardinal points" of a compass are north, south, east and west. In between these are the "semi-cardinal" points,, NE, NW, SE, and SW.
Intermediate directions are the directions or points that would fall in between the standard N, S, E, W points on a compass. These include NE, NW, SE, and SW.
Cardinal directions are the four regular directions such as north south east and west. Intermediate are the directions in between the cardinal directions such as NW, SW, NE, SE.
The earth is divided into the Northern and Southern hemispheres by the equator. It is divided into the Eastern and Western hemispheres by the Greenwich meridian and the 180 degree longitude. These then form the NE, NW, SE and SW quadrants.
