Darry loves Ponyboy a lot, so that's why he's always pressuring him to get straight A's and succeed in his life. He doesn't want his little bro to end up like the rest of the friends in the gang:full of violence and breaking rules. He's always hollering at him and wants the best for pony.
Pony thinks that Darry doesn't like him anymore since his parent's death. He thinks Darry wants to put him in a boys home, but Sodapop won't let him. He thinks Darry is too strict and doesn't understand him.
Ponyboy thinks that Darry does not like or love him and that can not be further from the truth. Darry is hard on Pony because he wants Ponyboy to succeed and make something of himself. Ponyboy is acting lazy and Darry sees that, so Darry uses his aggression on Pony to get him out of his funk. Pony sees that aggression and nothing else. The aggression is one of Darry's way of showing that he cares/loves his brother.
Ponyboy thinks that Darry doesn't care about him at all from the way he yells at him all the time. But Pony doesn't realize that Darry just scolds him alot because Darry wants him to have the opportunities he missed out on. Darry loves Ponyboy alot and he really cares, and he believes in Pony. That is why he is so strict with Ponyboy.

Darry's motivarion throughout The Outsiders is to keep his family safe and together. Since the Curtis boy's parents are dead Darry (as the oldest) has to make enough money to support him and his brothers. He also needs to keep Soda and Pony out of trouble so social services don't think he's a bad guardian and put Soda and Pony in a foster home.
