Portland cement is used to make concrete. And concrete is what we build things with. No large structures could exist without it, and concrete is used even in the construction of most smaller structures - like houses. Concrete forms a foundation or footing for most structures in modern societies. And aside from its use in concrete, cement is used in motar for applications in masonry. We also make stucco out of it, and stucco is an exterior finish for many homes and small structures. Additionally, most "regular" grout for tile and stonework is made from cement. The "fuzzy" term infrastructure includes roadways. Imagine roadways with no concrete. How about influent and effluent waterways? Most of these are built with concrete. We could go on, but we'd be here all day. Concrete is all around us. We just don't see it unless we look for it. Start looking and thinking about it and see what you can see.

Just look around to see all the uses of concrete in our daily lives! Concrete made of Portland Cement is a subject to all types of degradation starting with Carbonation as soon as it comes in contact with the atmosphere.

The thing most people overlook is that when concrete is placed, the water in the mix in addition to hydrating the concrete, is trying to evaporate out of the matrix to the atmosphere. In doing so, Bleed water is expelled to a surface. The channels this water travels through is called a gel-pore or capillary system. Once the water is gone -- this capillary system remains open allowing contaminates to enter the concrete. Concrete is a Big Sponge that breaths for years after it is poured.

A sealer to protect it is Vital to Longevity. Choose a sealer wisely. Surface membrane type sealers don't last! Stay away from a sealer that cautions Do Not expose to metals or glass. That is a Sodium Silicate based product that is gone in less than a year! Any sealer that allows for another coating at some future date?? Doesn't this beg the question of "What happened to the first application"?

Get a penetrating sealer to seal the gel-pore system, that doesn't form a film membrane and has a 15 year warranty for water proofing.

How does Portland cement differ chemically from other cement?

I assume you are contrasting portland cement with fly ash to portland cement with powdered slag? (Fly ash is from coal furnaces, powdered slag is from oil-burning furnaces). Slag is very similar to portland cement, and can be used to cheaply replace up to 50% of portland cement in concrete. This is less expensive, and the slag makes the hardened concrete more resistant to de-icers. Fly ash is not similar to portland cement, but is also good to resist de-icers. But since fly ash is not similar to portland cement, only 20 to 30% of portland cement can be replaced by it. The main difference in chemistry are the amounts of oxygen-containing elements. (Called 'oxides'). For example, portland cement has 65% of C2O, Slag cement has 45%, and Fly ash contains 25% For SiO2 portland cement 20%, Slag cement 33%, and Fly ash 37% For Al2O3 portland cement 4%, Slag cement 10%, Fly ash 16%. There are other very minor differences in chemistry.
