Not true. That is another of those urban myths, often spread by people who are political opponents of the president. The reality is that many people did not wear flag pins until after 9/11. At that point, some politicians began to wear them now and then, as a visible symbol of their love for America. Gradually, patriotic attitudes (and conformity) took over, and wearing a flag pin was no longer optional-- it began to be expected; and more politicians began to wear them, because their opponents would criticize their alleged lack of patriotism if they did not wear such a pin. Mr. Obama was one of many politicians from both parties who had not worn a flag pin every day, but as wearing them became the new norm in politics, he began to wear one too. You can absolutely see photos of him from 2008 when he is wearing a flag pin on his lapel.
