A Private First Class is still a Private. They may have to head up work details composed of themselves and lower ranking E2s and E1s, and will generally be expected to be more knowledgeable and proficient in their task than an E2 or E1. Some PFCs may even be called upon to fill junior NCO positions if there's nobody else available to fill the position.
The rank is simply Private (E2), referred to informally sometimes as "second class". There are three grades of Private in the Army - Private (E1), which wears no rank insignia, Private (E2), which wears one chevron, and Private First Class (E3), which wears one chevron and one rocker.
The abbreviation for Private First Class is PFC.

An enlisted rank in the U.S. Army that wears a single strip on the uniform would be a Private, specifically a Private (E-1) or Private First Class (E-2). This is the lowest rank in the Army and is denoted by a single chevron or strip on the uniform.
