RGB is color model and is used to describe colors using numbers and to determine number of possible colors. You can change color model from Image > Mode > choose color model. RGB is suitable for screen and different devices including internet. Other color modes are CMYK suitable for professional printing, Lab, Grayscale.
Although RGB is mainly for devices and screens it is recommended to work in this color mode before converting to CMYK.
Different color spaces within color mode can contain different range and number of possible colors in document (image). RGB color mode have different spaces like sRGB which can contain less colors then Adobe RGB but is supported by most browsers while browsers do not support Adobe RGB color profile, so when you want to post images on internet or send them on email first convert to sRGB profile (space) from File > Save for Web & Devices (turn on Convert to sRGB) or Edit > Convert to Profile > RGB > sRGB IEC61966-2.1.

When you are creating an image to be displayed on a screen (ie. computer monitor, TV, cell phone, electronic tablet, or projector).
Open image. At top of screen, click IMAGE>MODE>RGB.
RGB is color mode suitable for on screen viewing, rgb layer means that layer is in rgb color space. IN Photoshop you can see (or change) in which color mode you are working from Image > Mode
Probably because you work in Grayscale mode. Go to Image > Mode and click RGB Color.

If you haven't closed the image yet, you can go to a step in your History panel before you made the change. If you have already closed the image, you cannot undo the change, as Photoshop does not save your History.Note: if the mode change was from RGB to CMYK, or vice versa, you can always convert back, however, you will never get back exactly what you had before the first conversion.
Probably bacause another image is in Grayscale Mode. Image you try to drag and drop must much Color Mode of another image so it is converted on the fly to Grayscale (Black and White). To change Color Mode go to Image > Mode > choose RGB.
