Ramadan is the ninth month of the islamic-calendarand the most sacred of the twelve months. This year the Muslim month of fasting, Ramadan, began August 11 and ends September 9. The exact dates depend on one's geographical location. During Ramadan, Muslims refrain from eating and drinking from dusk to dawn as a lesson in patience, humility and spirituality. Ramadan is a time for increased devotion, reading of the qur-an, self-improvement, community involvement, charity and good deeds. Special meals are eaten before and after each day of fasting: suhoorbefore the dawn prayers, and iftar, the evening meal often eaten communally and often including dates.
