Russia has quite a few national heros probably starting with Boris and Gleb, the sainted sons of Vladimir I (the Great), who were killed by their brother to gain the throne. Alexander Nevsky would be another who successfully defended Russia against the Swedes at the River Neva and the Teutonic Knights at Lake Peipus. Ivan III (the Great) who freed Russia from Tartar control. Peter I (the Great) who defeated all of Russias agressors and introduced sweeping reforms to bring Russia into modern Europe. And a multitude of others. Many of the heroes of the Soviet era are no longer perceived as heroes.
