The Bible says that salvation is by grace through faith in Christ Jesus (Eph 2:8). However the faith has to be proved by subsequent works according to the Word of God. The one who believes must be baptized in the water (Mark 16:16).

Why were some people horrified by the church practice of selling indulgence?

If you are talking about the time and circumstances of the Protestant Reformation, the indulgences that were objected to were being sold by Pope Leo X to finance the rebuilding of St Peter's Basilica in Rome. Martin Luthor objected to the sale because he didn't believe that the Epistle of James was truly the word of God and couldn't understand the doctrine of works outlined therein. He began preaching the doctrine of salvation by sola fide, "faith alone", and called Johann Tetzel's aggressive salesmanship the "purchase of salvation" instead of the good works of already baptized believers which how the Roman Catholics saw it. Of course, that ignores the issues of free will vs tyrannical hierarchy which underlay the entire Reformation, as well as the politics of submission to Rome.

What is the relationship between faith and good works in Ephesians 2?

The word 'faith' is used once in Eph 2:8-10.The word 'work/s' is used three times in those same verses. It is the shed blood of Christ Jesus which brings salvation.Ultimately this is what makes salvation even possible. It is a gift from God to mankind. But that 'gift' is not just thrown out randomly to everyone. One must qualify for the gift. One qualifier is the need to have 'faith' in this provision.Another qualifier is 'good works'. Vs 10 states that 'we should walk' in good works.Perhaps an illustration:A company offers a 'prize'. The prize is completely free. There is nothing you could pay to receive the prize. But there are some things you NEED to do. You will need to apply for it. (Fill out the form.) You might need to be of a certain age to qualify. You may need to check off that you agree to the terms. There may be some restrictions. But just because it's a free gift, and you 'believe' that it's available; doesn't necessarily mean you automatically will be granted the free gift. There are some things you will NEED - TO DO. But granted, you are not 'earning' it. It is free. What Paul wrote in Eph 2, certainly does not undermine what James states in chapter 2. 'Faith' - - without 'works' - - 'is dead'. Therefore the claimed faith, is not real faith at all, if it is not accompanied by proper works.

Where can you find scriptures for works in the Bible?

Scriptures can be found in the Holy Bible. One can also find scriptures online.Answer:It you go to the Bible online, there are at least 85 verses speaking about works - usually referring to the great works of God. But to understand the Christian debate about works vs. faith and how works alone does not assure salvation, suggest reading Romans 3 and 4; Galatians 2 and 3, Ephesians 2 and 4 and especially James 2:14-26. Here is one of the verses on works:John 6:26-29New International Version (NIV)26 Jesus answered, "Very truly I tell you, you are looking for me, not because you saw the signs I performed but because you ate the loaves and had your fill. 27 Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. For on him God the Father has placed his seal of approval."28 Then they asked him, "What must we do to do the works God requires?"29 Jesus answered, "The work of God is this: to believe in the one he has sent."

What were the pharisees criticized Jesus for?

Jesus knew that the Pharisees diligently studied the scriptures. The Pharisee thought that the scriptures were where they were going to get all of "the answers". Instead Jesus himself tried to explain that 'He' was the true light that was coming into the world and that salvation was only attainable by coming directly to him --> John 5:39-47 You can further differentiate what Jesus had to say about the scriptures vs "the Word" by looking at John 1:1-3. This observation (truth) that Jesus had was further reinforced by his teachings as they continued on through the apostles that Jesus appointed. The book of Romans speaks a great deal about the Pharisees' belief in the scriptures (more specifically "the law") and how they thought they could obtain salvation by doing or not doing the right things.
