Saum or Sawm is the Arabic word for fasting. This is one of the 5 pillars of Islam which are:
1) Shahada or Kalima - the testimony (of faith) that anyone who embraces Islam or becomes a Muslim professes with their tongue, which is:
'None has the right to be worshipped except Allah and Muhammad is the messenger and slave of Allah).
There are two parts to this statement. The first is AFFIRMATION, that only Allah has the right to be worshipped and the second DENIAL of all that is worshipped besides or along with Allah, that they are false deities and should not be worshipped.
2) Salah (prayer) - 5 daily prayers, Friday prayer, funeral prayer, Eid (celebration) prayer, etc.
3) Zakah (charity or alms-giving)
4) Sawm (fasting) - to fast during the Islamic month of Ramadan, during which the Qur'aan was revealed. There are also other days which a Muslim is recommended to fast on, such as the 6 days within Shawwal (another Islamic lunar month).
5) Hajj (pilgrimage to Mecca) which a Muslim must undertake at least once in his lifetime to fulfil and complete this obligation.
