Smörgåsbord is a Scandinavian meal served buffet-style with multiple dishes consisting of a variety of foods and desserts. A smorgasbord may be simple or elaborate and can consist entirely of appetizers or make up the entire meal. It is a traditional gesture of hospitality.

gås = goose (lump of butter)

It is pronounced "SMOHR-guhs-bohrd" or "SCHMOHR-guhs-bohrd"

In Norway it is called koldtbord and in Denmark it is called kolde bord.


A special type of smörgåsbord is the julbord which is the standard Christmas dinner in Scandinavian countries.
