Influences from African, Asian, Caribbean and modern western cultures are evidenced in Suriname's music.
Specifically, Asian influences from northern India and the Indonesian island of Java are strong in the northern one-tenth (1/10) of the country. They mingle with modern western musical influences transmitted by Suriname's colonial and post-colonial contacts with the European Kingdom of the Netherlands. They weaken further inland, where indigenous and West African musical influences predominate in pockets.

Suriname's main industry is bauxite mining. Suriname is one of the top 10 producers of bauxite in the world. The Aluminum Company of America subsidiary, SURALCO, has been mining bauxite in Suriname since 1916.
Bananas, citrus fruits, rice, sugar cane, and vegetablesare grown in Suriname. About half of the total cultivated land is devoted to rice farming. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture [USDA], Suriname exported 20 tons out of the total 2,125 tons of rice exported from South America.
