The Magic Mountain is an early-20th-century German novel that became extremely influential on thinking and later German literature. The novel was written either side of World War 1, the experience of which caused the author to revise the novel considerably. As a result there is a significant exploration in the novel of issues that are both contemporary (sexuality) and those with historic significance (the politics of class). These themes give the novel a lasting sense of relevancy.
