There is no specific Postcode for England or the UK.

The Royal Mail (England's main postal service) uses up to an 8 digit series of letters and numbers for their Postcodes.

There are approximately 125 Postcode Areas in the UK. There are approximately 20 Postcode Districts in an area. There are approximately 3000 addresses in a Sector. There are approximately 15 addresses per Unit.

A typical Postcode would be for a street, or part of a street but some businesses and properties have their own unique Postal code.

For example, the Postcode CT9 2EN broken down into the 4 parts above in bold means :-

The first part of the code identifies the area, CT is for Canterbury area. The second part of the code, 9, identifies the district. The third part of the code, 2, identifies the sector. The fourth part of the code, EN, identifies the unit down to one of the 15 approx.

The house number which identifies the exact unit is not a part of the Postcode.

If you know the number of the property and name of the street in the town you want the Postcode for then you can use the free online link below to find it.

The postcode system for the whole of the United Kingdom is a postal code which is much finer than US zipcodes.

Individual postcodes are in the form XX## #XX where X represents letters A to Z, and # is a number 0-9. For example the postcode for Worcester Cathedral is WR1 2LA, the first two letters WR indicating the county of Worcestershire.

In London, the format is slightly different for historical reasons. London had its own postal areas long before postcodes were introduced and it has kept these areas as the first part of its postcodes.

In towns or cities, these postcodes specify a street of part of a street, normally just a few houses. In country areas they may be more widespread but still define just a few houses. Many large buildings have a unique postcode.

This means that to find a postcode for a particular building you almost need the complete address. A town of any size may have hundreds of postcodes.

See the Related Link which gives the postcode of any UK address - or the addresses corresponding to a given postcode.
