Valentine's Day, in short, is the day of love.
It is the day to show those you truly care about, how much you love and appreciate them. Typically, Valentine's Day is associated with romantic love: Girlfriends, boyfriends, husbands, wives, secret admirers (and the occasional mistress).
It has now became more mainstream to show 'love' to anyone you care for: parents, children, friends and even co-workers tend to be a little sweeter to one another on Valentine's Day.
The origins of Valentine's Day are shrouded in mystery, although most people would agree it has something to do with a Dude named Valentine.
Sir Valentine was a 3rd century priest who performed marriage ceremonies against the wishes of Roman emperor Claudius II. In jail, Valentine was smitten with his jailor's daughter. On February 14, 270 Valentine was executed. before he was killed he wrote a letter to his love signed "From your Valentine."(His remains are in the Whitefriar Street Carmelite Church in Dublin).
To this day when we refer our 'Valentine,' we speak of someone we truly love (or at least someone we love enough to buy a handful of flowers and a box of assorted chocolates).
