Waltz in Mexico

European music has been very influential in Mexico since 1519. Initially European influence was Spanish and later Italian. In the nineteenth century Central European music erupts in Mexico and has great influence on its popular variant, with the introduction of the polka, mazurka and waltz. About the waltz is a note in the archives of the Inquisition as of 1815, a complaint that is called corrupt and degenerate Francia.16 this waltz imported during the empire of Maximilian of Hapsburg European salon music prevailed among Mexican elites and the military band was introduced. Helmut Brenner studied scores of the late nineteenth century in the General Archive of the Nation and concludes that most are salon pieces for piano published in Paris and that most are waltzes.

Many Mexican folk tunes nineteenth century were written in waltz time. This and the rhythm of the dance rhythms of Havana are used in the Mexican songs, although the pace of polka appears frequently. The waltz was imposed in Mexico during the empire of Maximilian and reached its peak during the Porfiriato. Many popular Mexican musicians composed waltzes and among them, the most successful was Juventino Rosas. Call it valsero composer, because among his works are printed 18 waltzes (published seven habaneras polkas and mazurkas and five). His best known composition is his waltz "Over the Waves," which became recognized worldwide.
