Practically all (96.5%) of the dense atmosphere of Venus is made of carbon dioxide. The remaining gases are 3.5% nitrogen and trace amounts of sulfur dioxide, argon, water vapor, carbon monoxide, helium, neon, hydrogen chloride, and hydrogen fluoride. All of the oxygen on Venus has been bound to crustal rocks and practically all free hydrogen was lost to space.

* There are clouds of sulfur dioxide and sulfuric acid "rain" that never reaches the surface. However, this could present a problem to probes passing through the atmosphere.
