In the Roman numeric system, symbols are given value. When a smaller value symbol proceeds a higher value symbol, then the smaller value symbol is subtracted from the high value symbol. In this case XC is equal to 90 (X =10, C = 100. So XC equals 100 - 10 or 90).

The symbols that hold numeric are I = 1, V = 5, X = 10, L = 50, C = 100, D = 500, M = 1,000.
