Free, just press the the big button in the middle of the controller, with the ethernet cable or wireless antenna connected. From the menu select an option that should say something to the extent of Connect to Xbox Live. You will then be able to select a Silver membership and be able to mess around online.
Once you do the initial setup on your console and hook it up to the internet via the Ethernet cable (included) it will ask you to make a profile. Once you set up your profile you will automatically have the silver membership, because it is free. But the kicker is that for you to do Live parties you will have to purchase the XBox Live Gold membership, which gives you full access! You can either go to your local retail location or (with a credit card) purchase it from XBox Marketplace. Hope this helped

Also you will have to do this once every year or 3 months to stop it from expiring if you don't do it in the recermended time you will go back to being an xbox live silver member again with all the limitations back in place .
Xbox live silver lets you download things such as movies, games etc. You can talk to your friends only via private chat.
Xbox live Gold lets you do everything Xbox silver does, but you can then play online against friends and people around the world, you can talk to more then 1 friend at a time via party mode.
It is the free membership to Xbox Live given to anyone who buys an Xbox 360. It requires Broadband or DSL. It is similar to Gold Membership, but lacks certain features.
You are connected to live but you have not purchased gold membership. The main thing you can't do is play games online.
