A sad event for the parents.A still born baby or "stillbirth" is where the fetus has died whilst still within the womb. Most definitions require this to have happened after the 24th week of pregnancy for it to be officially classed a stillbirth. Once the baby has died, the mother may or may not then get contractions and go into labour to pass the baby out into this world. Most stillbirths occur in full term pregnancies, most likely causes are:

  • bacterial infection
  • birth defects, especially pulmonary hypoplasia
  • chromosomal aberrations
  • growth retardation
  • intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy
  • maternal Diabetes
  • high blood pressure, including preeclampsia
  • maternal consumption of recreational drugs (such as alcohol, nicotine, etc.) or pharmaceutical drugs contraindicated in pregnancy
  • postdate pregnancy
  • placental abruptions
  • physical trauma
  • radiation poisoning
  • Rh disease
  • Female Genital Mutilation
  • umbilical cord accidents
