A 1958 Collier's encyclopedia is not even worth its shipping cost and this is not a new situation. In 1980 (before the internet) I went to a used book store in New Orleans with my set and the proprietor of the shop showed me other Collier's sets for sale in his store; their price was rock bottom low even then.

I gave the set to my girlfriend at the time; who was a school teacher. She put them in her classroom for her students to use. Nowadays, with the internet, they would not have even that use.

The value of a 1950 first edition Colliers Encyclopedia can vary depending on its condition, completeness, and demand among collectors. Generally, vintage encyclopedia sets like this one can range in value from $50 to a few hundred dollars, but it's best to consult with a rare book dealer or appraiser for a more accurate valuation.

Encyclopedias less than a hundred years old are for the most part dumpster (or recycling bin, but books are hard to recycle due to the glue in the bindings) fodder.

Charities receive donations of old encyclopedias all the time and generally just dump them or send them off to be recycled, because they're literally not worth the storage space it takes to keep them, and nobody wants to buy them. The value of an encyclopedia is as a reference work, and if it's more than a few years old it's worthless for that purpose.
