You have two options. You can purchase 24" cross pieces for your grid, to turn the 2X4 sections into 2X2 sections, or you can purchase 2X4 tiles that look like 2X2 tiles. Ceilume's Stratford Style is a good example.
Just right click on it. You will see that you have a 3x3 grid instead of the normal 2x2 grid you have in your inventory.
6x6 square would make 36 square units of space. Each 2x2 square would fit in a 4 square unit space. So therefore, you would need 9 2x2 squares to fill a 6x6 grid.
I believe you mean a crafting table. Well, get one block of wood. Place it into your 2x2 crafting grid. Then you will get four wooden planks. Fill in all the squares in the 2x2 grid and - wala! You have a crafting table.

The tiles sit on a grid either 2x2 or 2x4 foot sections. The grid is held up on wires fastened to the ceiling joists.
Open your inventory, and you will see a 2x2 grid in the top right corner. Drag 4 wooden planks in each square of the grid. Take it out after you crafted the crafting table.
