What might be called an 8-stroke engine was the utility engine made from the late 1800's to almost 1950. They had a large flywheel and centrifugal regulation mechanism such that they would fire every other power stroke if not loaded. More specifically, they would not fire unless the rpm went below a value as set by the centrifugal mechanism.

If the load was light, the engine would keep the exhaust valve open and prevent the magneto from fireing. That both decompressed the cylinder and prevented sucking in more fuel. The purpose being to reduce fuel consumption which worked quite well.

The sound is quite distinctive and these can be seen operating at many state fairs.

Is the 6.0 Briggs and Stratton engine a four-stroke or two-stroke?

The best way to know if an engine is 2-stroke or 4-stroke, is to look for an oil spout. If the engine has an oil spout where oil has to be poured into, it is a 4-stroke. If the engine has no oil spout and the oil has to be added to the fuel, then it is a 2-stroke.
