The number 1 application is to directly charge battery banks. This is useful for cell towers and off-grid living where solar/wind and battery banks are utilized. DC generators are simple and they are efficient. The generator turns on when the battery bank drops, recharges the bank and then shuts down. You can use the available energy 100% to recharge, then shut down.
AC generators aren't as efficient - assuming the load is variable and that you need to size the generator/engine/fuel consumption near the maximum expected load. Much of the time, the AC generator is not working near its 80% load. When it drops below it's optimal efficiency rating (energy output/unit of fuel), you are just burning fuel up, which can be expensive over time. And it's not great for the environment.
Like any tool, no one tool does it all for all applications at all times, but for solar/wind/cell towers and other remote locations with battery banks, DC generators are very nice and efficient (and small and lightweight).
