Fin whales are usually dark gray dorsally and white ventrally, although they can appear brown when covered in a sheen of diatoms. They are dark gray on the left side of the head and white on the right. They also have a chevron on the back, between the pectoral fins.

The fin whale (Balaenoptera physalus) is the second longest whale in the world, second only to the blue whale (Balaenoptera musculus). It can grow to a reported length of 89.5 ft (27.3 m) and weigh over 70 tons. It has a prominent, backswept dorsal fin. It is dark gray dorsally and white ventrally. It has asymmetrical coloration, with dark gray on its left lower jaw and white on its right lower jaw. It has a V-shaped chevron oriented forward, between its two long, tapered pectoral fins. It has 50-100 long grooves on its belly which expand and fill with water when it feeds on krill or small schooling fish such as herring or anchovies. It can live 80-95 years and is found in all the world's oceans, including the Mediterranean Sea.
